Established in 1976, the Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge was founded to preserve and promote the unique and exciting culture of Scotland. Rich in history and tradition, this culture has a uniqueness of cuisine, music, dress, art, poetry, and has contributed a great deal to the progress and betterment of the world, the United States, and has a strong history in the Baton Rouge area.

The Caledonian Society of Baton Rouge sponsors a program of education and community service that includes: the teaching of the Great Highland Bagpipes, Scottish Drums, Scottish Country Dancing, and Highland Broadsword Fighting, a Scottish Cultural Study Group, participation at area festivals and Highland Games, assistance with Kirkings of the Tartan at a number of area churches, as well as informative presentations at libraries, schools, and elsewhere in the community.

The Society is divided into sections, each with its own focus and mission. These sections all work together for the Society’s overall mission to promote and preserve Scottish culture.

In addition to the regular meetings of individual sections, the Society puts on various events throughout the year including: a Burns Night Supper, the St. Andrew’s Brunch, the Annual General Meeting, and a St. Andrew Dinner. The Scottish Cultural Society (“The Coterie”) holds meetings typically on the third Wednesday at 6:30, from February through May. Other events are organized from time to time as well, such as: Tartan Balls, Highland Mini-Games and Festival, Christmas and Hogmany Parties and Ceilidhs.

With such a wide range of variety of activities, the Caledonian Society is a perfect fit for the whole family. And while our Society was founded and exists to promote Scottish culture, many of our members are not of Scottish descent–they just love Scotland’s culture! We welcome into our ranks any and all who want to join us in our mission.

We are proud of our work and participation in the community of Baton Rouge and the Gulf South. We invite you to join us!
