Alfred Denis Godley, Classical Scholar and Writer, Is Born in Ashfield, Co. Cavan

Alfred Denis Godley (22 January 1856 – 27 June 1925) was an Anglo-Irish classical scholar and author of humorous poems.

Godley was born in Ashfield, County Cavan, to Rev James Godley and his wife Eliza La Touche. James was the Church of Ireland Rector of Ashfield from 1849 to 1861, then Rector of Lavey. From 1866 to 1904 he served as Rector of Carrigallen, County Leitrim

Godley was a distinguished classical scholar, writer, and translator. His contributions to classical literature, particularly his translations of Aristophanes’ comedies, have left a lasting impact on the field.

Godley’s career included his position as a fellow and tutor in classics at Magdalen College, Oxford. His translations are noted for their wit and literary skill. In addition to his scholarly work, he also wrote poetry and contributed to various literary and academic endeavors during his lifetime.
